Growth as a Teacher: Teaching Practice Experience at BUCEILS-SHS
In the journey of shaping myself as an educator, the Teaching
Practice experience has been an unforgettable pinnacle. It's the moment where
theory meets practice, and the knowledge gained in classrooms is put to the
test in real-life classroom settings. In this writing, I will share valuable
experiences during my Teaching Practice period at BUCEILS-SHS (Bicol University
College of Education Integrated Laboratory School - Senior High School).
In the process of teaching practice at BUCEILS-SHS, I faced several challenges that tested my ability to teach physics, especially in English. However, I found these challenges to be highly motivating, and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire teaching process. After preparing the lesson plans, teaching materials, and all necessary preparations, I proceeded with teaching in the 12th-grade STEM. I had teaching sessions every Tuesday and Friday from 09:45 to 12:00.

Next, I explained the concepts of vectors by providing examples and exercises for the students. Students who knew the answers actively participated by answering questions on the chalkboard. Additionally, I always encouraged students to ask questions and engage in discussions, helping them better understand physics concepts and their real-life applications.

Furthermore, I organized group activities for the students. These activities helped students collaborate in solving physics problems as a team. After completing the group work, students were asked to present their findings in front of their peers. This allowed students to work effectively in groups, and I always took the opportunity to address any misconceptions that might have arisen during these presentations. Towards the end of each lesson, I conducted summative assessments by giving written tests that students completed individually. Assessment also took into consideration students' participation and engagement throughout the learning process.
Student Activity |
Time management was a crucial skill in teaching physics, especially because physics is often seen as a subject that requires in-depth understanding and sufficient time for learning. I meticulously planned each physics lesson with clear learning objectives and estimated time for each activity, including introductions, content delivery, demonstrations, student activities, and assessments. In cases where time constraints arose, I prioritized the most important and relevant physics concepts while avoiding excessive details that were less essential. After each lesson, I evaluated how time had been utilized.
Regarding classroom management, I ensured that the class ran smoothly and attentively. Before commencing a lesson, I ensured that the classroom was clean and ready for use. Additionally, I was always ready to assist students who encountered difficulties in understanding the material and facilitated all student activities.
I also encountered various challenges while teaching, and problem-solving skills were essential. For example, when some students had difficulty grasping the material, I sought assistance from my cooperating teacher. Prior to the lessons, my cooperating teacher always reviewed my lesson plans and provided valuable input for improving the material to be delivered. After the lessons, they provided feedback on my teaching methods, which was invaluable for my development as a teacher. Throughout my teaching practice, I had to adapt to differences in curriculum, language, culture, and other factors. However, these differences provided opportunities for me to learn and gain valuable experience. Positive feedback from the students made me thoroughly enjoy the teaching process.
"In conclusion, my teaching practice at BUCEILS-SHS provided me with numerous valuable lessons. I realized that being an educator is a significant responsibility, but it is also full of potential and opportunities to influence students' lives. I developed skills in classroom management, communication, and adaptation that will be highly beneficial in my future career as a teacher. I also learned the importance of maintaining a positive learning environment in the classroom, which can motivate students to learn with enthusiasm. I am deeply grateful to my mentor, fellow teachers, and students who shared this experience with me. This teaching experience serves as a valuable foundation in my journey as an educator, and I feel prepared to face the challenges and opportunities in the field of education."
